Technology from Stavanger Enhances Care and Support

During a visit to Lervig Nursing Home, Erna Solberg and other politicians saw how health technology developed in Stavanger improves patients’ quality of life and eases the workload for healthcare staff. Tidewave Medical’s automated mattress was highlighted as a prime example of how technology can support a strained elderly care system.

From Bedridden to Social

Former Prime Minister Erna Solberg, joined by MP Margret Hagerup, local politician Jon Peter Hernes, and facility manager Ann Helen Aune, heard the story of a patient previously bedridden 24/7 due to a severe pressure ulcer.

Through dedicated staff care and the use of Tidewave—a mattress that gently and automatically repositions the patient at night—the ulcer fully healed. The patient can now sit in a chair during the day, sleep better, and be more social, greatly improving life for both the patient and their family.

Supporting Healthcare Staff, Not Replacing Them

The visit emphasized that technological solutions are meant to support, not replace, healthcare workers. Tidewave saves time, reduces physical strain, and enables quality care with current staffing levels.

Participants agreed on the need for more such solutions in elderly care.

Local Solution with Global Impact

Tidewave Medical, a startup from Stavanger, builds on an idea from the 1990s oil industry, later developed by the inventor’s grandchild, who founded the company in 2017. Today, the solution is used in 15 countries.

Tidewave provides continuous, quiet movement for those needing manual repositioning, helping prevent and treat pressure injuries while easing the burden on healthcare staff and families.

Based on a press release from Tidewave Medical, published April 30, 2025.
