The Ministry of Health and Care Services is seeking targeted input to support the government’s work on a national strategy for quantum technology.

The Ministry of Health and Care Services is inviting the ecosystem to provide written input to support the development of the government’s national strategy for quantum technology.

The ministry is particularly interested in information on:

  • Ongoing or planned initiatives where quantum technology, or combinations of quantum technology, AI and advanced computing, are being considered or tested in healthcare-related applications
  • Areas within the healthcare sector where quantum technology is considered to have the greatest potential for early adoption
  • Any barriers currently preventing development or implementation

The input received will form part of the knowledge base used to assess whether and how the healthcare sector should be included in the national strategy.

Background

Quantum technology is becoming increasingly relevant to the healthcare sector, particularly in drug discovery, precision medicine, diagnostics and medical imaging. The technology enables more accurate simulations of biological and chemical processes, as well as new types of highly sensitive sensors that may support earlier and more precise diagnosis. International analyses also suggest that the combination of classical computing, artificial intelligence and quantum technology makes it possible to adopt quantum solutions incrementally, without waiting for fully mature quantum computers.

As a result, several countries have prioritised healthcare in their national quantum strategies. The United Kingdom has established a dedicated mission linked to the NHS, while Denmark and Sweden are investing heavily in quantum technology for life sciences and clinical research. Germany, France and Canada have also identified healthcare as a key area for early adoption. Overall, healthcare is widely regarded as one of the sectors most likely to benefit from early applications of quantum technology, particularly in research-intensive parts of the health system.

In Norway, quantum sensing and quantum metrology are considered among the country's strongest areas of expertise, creating opportunities to connect these capabilities with healthcare applications at an early stage.
