Norway's Ambassador to the State of Israel

Ambassador Kåre R. Aas joined the Norwegian Foreign Service in 1983.

He began his current role as Norway’s Ambassador to the State of Israel in September 2020. Prior to that, he served for seven years (2013 – 2020) as Norway’s Ambassador to the United States and as Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from 2008 until 2010. From 2005 until 2007 he was Norwegian Governor at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. He also held positions at Norway’s delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) in 1996 – 2001, the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland (1988-1991) and the Norwegian embassy in Santiago, Chile (1985-1988). At NATO, Ambassador Aas coordinated positions in negotiating NATO’s strategic concept, the development of NATO’s strategic partnership with Russia, the partnership between NATO and the Ukraine, EU-NATO relations and NATO operations in the Balkans.

Ambassador Aas served from 2010 until 2013 in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Political Director, and from 2003 – 2008, he held the role of Director General at the Department for Security Policy and the High North. He was responsible for Norwegian security policy and Norway’s strategic cooperation with European and transatlantic partners, including in NATO and Norway’s participation in international operations. Mr. Aas was also responsible for Norwegian policy and obligations within the fields of disarmament and non-proliferation, nuclear safety, Norway’s strategic policy regarding the High North, and bilateral relations with the USA, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, South-Caucasus and Central Asia. He performed as the Deputy Director General at Department for Security Policy from 2001 until 2003.

Ambassador Kåre R. Aas has three daughters and one son.
